Maui Romantic Vacation Ideas, Tips, & Attractions

Vacations on the Valley Isle
Attractions and Tips for Great Romantic Maui Vacations

Maui, the Hawaiian "Valley Isle" is a sun-soaked paradise waiting to be found. Maui is far removed from the more tourist crowded Waikiki, and is geared towards couples looking for some romantic rest and relaxation, even adventure if that's what you crave. From the beautiful beaches at Kaanapali to the trip back in Hawaiian time to the town of Hana, Maui offers visitors unique activities and destinations to explore and discover.

Travelling To Maui

Aloha Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines are the 2 main carriers serving Kahului airport from the United States. Delta, United and American airlines also serve Kahului out of different US cities. Outside of the US, Canadian airlines that fly directly to Maui several times a week are Air Canada, Westjet and Harmony Airlines. Flights out of the West Coast of North America, depending on where you are flying out from, can take from 3 - 5.5 hours to Maui.

After arriving in Kahului, your best option is to rent a car, as several destinations on the island are a 30-45 minute drive from the airport. Depending on what sort of exploring you are planning to do on Maui, a compact car is generally sufficient for travel on the island, especially if you are making the winding trek out to Hana. Towns and attractions on Maui are quite spread out from each other, so a rental car here is highly recommended.

Maui Weather

One word about Maui weather...."excellent". Like many of the Hawaiian islands, the Eastern side of the island receives more amounts of rain than the Western coast, and this is usually from late November to Februrary. The town of Kihei is usually the driest location on Maui, receiving the least amount of rainfall annually. Sudden rain storms are not uncommon at any location on Maui, but for the most part, the island receives warm sunny weather year round. (84F - 88F)

Molokini

Molokini, the stunning crater shaped island located about a 20 minute boat ride off the Western coast of Maui, is a perfect spot to visit for your romantic getaway. Enjoy a whale watching tour, or grab your snorkel mask and swim in the crater shaped bay with the numerous tropical fish, dolphins, and sea turtles that make the waters around Molokini home. Boat tours leave Kihei, Lahaina, and Kaanapali several times a day, ranging in price from $59 to $139 and are well worth the trip that you will never forget.

Maui Sunsets

So many locations to choose from for a romantic sunset on Maui along the Western coastline. Favourite sunset viewing spots include Kamaole Beach and Sugar Beach in Kihei, Wailea Beach, and the seawall in the town of Lahaina. Head up to Kaanapali and seek out one of the many private spots on the miles of beach there to find your perfect romantic spot for viewing the sunset, it is something you will not want to miss. Every day, locals and tourists stop to take in the breath-taking view, make sure you do too.

Hana

Travel back to "old Hawaii" to the town of Hana, but the trip is not about the destination, it's about the journey there. The famous "Road To Hana" is well travelled, long, and winding, taking you through the tropical rainforest. The total trip is 36 miles, and with all the trip's hightlights along the way, leave yourself about 4 hours to arrive at the Hana coast. Make sure to leave early with a full tank of gas and the entire day free in order for you to explore. A Hana CD guide is recommended for the trip, so you don't miss out on anything, you can purchase this at the Shell gas station on Route 380 in Kahului, right before the Hana Highway (Route 36). Plan a romantic picnic on a black sand beach, swim under a tropical waterfall, visit the Ke'anae Arboretum, or explore the caves at Wai'anapanapa State Park.

Haleakala

Haleakala National Park, home of a 10,000 foot high volcano, is Maui's most specatular natural attraction. Haleakala is dormant, and the 2 hour drive to the top is well worth the time once you arrive at the peak. Many visitors arrive in the early morning hours to wait and view the sunrise, which makes for a breath-taking experience. You will also be able to see the blue waters of the Pacific reach out for miles, along with the coastlines of Maui. The temperature drops considerably at the Haleakala summit, so bring some warm clothes, especially if you decide to take one of the many hiking trails that can lead deep into the volcanic crater. Bike tours, which involve biking down the volcano, or trail hiking tours are offered, there is also a small museum and gift shop near the top. The Haleakala National Park does charge a $10 entrance charge.
